After a World Championships race as a protagonist and from which she emerged in great physical condition, today Sofia Bertizzolo of UAE Team ADQ took third place on the podium at the 9th Giro dell'Emilia Internazionale Donne Elite (1.Pro).
Race of 89.7 kilometres, with start in Carpi and uphill finish in Bologna, on the hill of San Luca. And it was the final climb that decided the fate of the race. Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo) won, rewarded by forcing her way up the hardest part of the climb, the 'Curva delle Orfanelle', but Italian Sofia Bertizzolo held off the winner's wheel first and then behind American Veronica Ewers (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) to climb onto the day's podium.
Slovenian Urska Pintar, 11th, and Englishwoman Sophie Wright, 19th, also entered the Top 20.
Great work by the whole team, as Sofia Bertizzolo's words also testify: “Honestly, I wanted to win today because I knew I had a great condition. I was probably afraid of losing and I wasted a little too much energy in the final, but I tried to grit my teeth and a very positive podium came anyway. I must also congratulate all my teammates. Sophie and Urska had freedom to try for a placing too, while Laura Tomasi, Alessia Patuelli and Linda Zanetti did a great job for me. I like to trust the young riders when they give you this kind of support because they deserve it”.
On Tuesday, 4th October, the team will take part in the 2nd Tre Valli Varesine Women's Race, 88.9 km from Busto Arsizio to Varese, still in Italy, starting at 9.25 and finishing at 11.35 CEST. In the race there will be: Mavi Garcia, Sofia Bertizzolo, Sophie Wright, Urska Pintar, Laura Tomasi, Linda Zanetti.
