Why is this buzzword being used so often when talking about literature and why is it dividing literary criticism? The Finnish poet Susinukke Kosola, author of four books of poetry, teacher of creative writing and founder of the Kolera Collective publishing house, thinks that sincerity is not interesting without artistic vision and that quality writing should offer more than reproducing the world. Many trendy books have little to offer, and Finnish literary critics are hungry for some real fiction. Veronika Razpotnik, a poet from Slovenia, with two published books of poetry, the first of which has been nominated for the best debut of the year 2022, says that sincerity is second to genuineness. She points out that a poet doesn’t have to leave her room to write well, and that autofiction is important in reflecting societal structures of late-stage capitalism.>> Listen here

FROM SEA TO SHINING SCENE: HAUSACHER LESELENZA reportageSaturday, July 13, 2024 was far more than the ‘long night of poetry’ (Lange Nacht der Poesie) billed by Hausacher LeseLenz festival organizers. It was an entire day and night of poetry, stretching from one morning through to the predawn hours of the next. The day began and ended with Versopolis, bracketing a survey of contemporary poetry ranging from China to the Caribbean, Lithuania to Romania, Nigeria, Switzerland, and virtually everywhere in-between. Admittedly, such polyphony has long been the rule for LeseLenz.

This year’s Versopolis guests were emblematic of the kind of profound lyrical range that has become a staple of LeseLenz: Lithuanian poet Aušra Kaziliūnaitė and Dutch-Curaçaoan poet Radna Fabias embodying Versopolis’ commitment to increasing the visibility of a many-sided European poetry. Because where else can one, in a matter of hours, witness the performative projections of a Baltic poet steeped in the interwoven traditions of philosophy, religion and folklore, and then be lulled and shaken, caressed and rudely awakened by the subtle wisdom from the Dutch-Caribbean, by a poet whose inspirations span oceans and continents? With Versopolis, in Hausach, one gets both.>> Read Jon Cho-Polizzi's reportage
BAZHAN RESIDENCY VOL. 2Bohdan Storokha and Oleksandr Mymruk conclude their residencyThis year marks the 120th anniversary of poet and translator Mykola Bazhan's birth. Why discuss Bazhan now? Despite his complex nature, his remarkable talent in poetry and translation is undeniable. The BAZHAN residency was established to highlight his significance and explore his work beyond traditional education. It also offers a peaceful space for Ukrainian poets to develop their projects. In the second edition, the residency hosted poet Mykhailo Zharzhailo and now two other residents. Bohdan Storokha, a PhD holder in foreign literature, translated poems by German expressionist Gottfried Benn and shared insights on the challenges of translating poetry. Exploring Kamianets-Podilskyi for the first time, he captured its essence through photography. The third resident, Oleksandr Mymruk, is a poet, journalist, and editor. With a master's in economics and a PhD in philosophy of culture, he has edited for "Chytomo" and authored the poetry collection "Tsukrovyk." IVA DAMJANOVSKI AT POETRY INT.Moved by VersopolisIn June Versopolis' poets Iva Damjanovski and Sigbjørn Skåden visited Rotterdam, The Netherlands to join Poetry International.

For her the festival was a memorable experience with innovative poetry presentations and a strong connection with the audience. The poet appreciated their first Dutch translation and the trilingual chapbooks, thanking translators Roul Schuyt and Zoran Anchevski, as well as the posters created by Academy students. The festival's organizing and production team was praised for being attentive and meticulous, making it an honor to be part of the program.>> Stroll down her memory lane
